1. Remanufactured turbochargers do not last as long as new ones
New, original turbochargers are designed and manufactured to fit specific applications. Components and adjustment values are designed and set up to ensure the best performance and maximum reliability. Remanufactured turbos take advantage of this know-how and reuses the components so that the turbochargers can be brought back to life again.
All bearings and seals are systematically replaced by new ones, just like you would find in an original unit. The reused components are thoroughly inspected and tested individually for wear and damage to ensure their quality. We balance, adjust, and test each unit to ensure it performs as well as the OE unit. In total, each turbocharger passes more than thirty quality tests. The result is units with the same characteristics in terms of performance or reliability but at a lower price point and a lower carbon footprint.
Sometimes our specialists even discover potential for improvements. Product Manager Nelson Gracias: "Turbochargers remanufactured by our team have already completed many thousands of kilometres on the road. We can therefore identify wear points that are not necessarily noticeable during the development stage and take corrective action." For example, our specialists optimised the lubrication of an original turbocharger from a major European vehicle manufacturer. In doing so, they eliminated a weak point in the original design that had often led to premature failures of the OES part.
2. It is too difficult to find a remanufactured turbocharger matching the OE number
BORG Automotive offers more than 870 references for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, covering more than 157 million vehicles in Europe. Chances are, you will be able to find a turbocharger matching your OE number. Furthermore, we have established a professional logistics network, which means short lead times and a high level of security and consistency of supply, and most of our turbos come with a gasket kit. All development of new part numbers is based on OE units and cores to ensure we meet the same standards as the OE unit in our production.
3. There is no warranty on remanufactured turbochargers
The highest quality must be guaranteed by the systematic replacement of critical components with new ones, thorough balancing, minimum flow adjustment, stringent tests, and traceability of each unit. All turbochargers from BORG Automotive are supplied and ready for installation with a two-year warranty with no mileage limit.
Remanufactured turbochargers from BORG Automotive are commercially available under the Elstock, DRI, TMI, and Lucas brands.

When replacing a turbocharger, it is strongly recommended to replace the oil, air and oil filters, gasket kits, and oil fittings, as well as to inspect hoses and pipes. Following the specific mounting instructions is essential, especially for applications with well-known issues.
The main failure modes are usually linked to external factors such as oil starvation or lubrication failure, oil contamination, foreign objects through the inlet or exhaust, as well as oil, air, and gas leaks.

Before fitting a new turbocharger, you must determine what has caused the breakdown of the old turbo as this will likely damage the new turbo, too.
